CONCEPT
I propose a concept to design and
install incredible recreational health and fitness facilities across the
country. Included here will be computer
labs with monitored Internet access. The
SHAPE UP AMERICA CENTER™ will service children and adults of all races,
cultures, in all communities throughout each city and will have access to up to
date information about health and wellness. Both children and adults will learn how to
exercise correctly, eat well and play sports in a fun, educational and
entertaining way. The amount of property
made available to us would determine the scope of services we will provide in
that particular facility. To provide all the programs we have in mind the space
required for each facility would be 60,000 square feet with a minimum of 10,000
square feet to provide a skeleton program. The full scope of recreational,
physical and educational services we have slated will be invaluable, especially
in the inner-city areas. Our Operation Fitness Organization is currently
seeking out those individuals in communities around the country, sharing our
vision, to help introduce our ideas and sell this concept; with pour modus
operandi to procure the facilities and required political backing and monetary
support necessary in making this a reality at the earliest date possible.
PURPOSE
Sports activities, fitness
equipment, exercise accessories, and fitness conditioning and nutrition
tutorial software, will be the tools that will be utilized to improve physical
and mental wellness of the children and adults of the communities we serve –
and that is so drastically needed.
GOAL
The SHAPE UP AMERICA CENTER™ programs are designed to add value
to a person's life in a fun and exciting way.
Ultimately, my goal is to give children and adults the ability to
prevent eating disorders, develop strong social skills, establish leadership
qualities and learn healthy eating habits. Thus, the children will not only
develop a healthy body, but also a strong, confident and healthy attitude
towards life.
PROGRAMS - OPERATION FITNESS™
It is a privilege to introduce my “OPERATION FITNESS™ Program” for children and adults.
This program is designed to teach people how to work out properly, eat right
and create healthy lifestyles. Although
centered on the physical results, the program ultimately is designed to
increase motivation and improve self-esteem.
The all-around effect is an equal balance in feeling good mentally,
emotionally and physically.
Sports & Fitness Conditioning
Programs
Martial Arts/ Self-Defense Classes
Nutritional Counseling
Specialized Programs For The Handicapped
Computer Classes - Featuring
Tutorials, Animation, and Virtual Games
Fitness is a learned behavior and by
encouraging the fun of movement and teaching the benefits of exercise, we can
help kids develop healthy habits that will remain with them for the rest of
their lives. All of our programs are
designed to develop and improve self-esteem, concentration and discipline. All classes will be taught in a loving,
learning, non-threatening and engaging environment, where the participants will
interact with the professionals that will serve as a strong mentoring
program.
Once a month, we will offer various
pro and amateur athletes and fitness authorities / celebrities to do training
seminars, lectures and exhibitions.
The centers will have a parent
participation program to teach parents how to properly work out with their kids
leading to better communication within the family. The programs for the youngest children (15
months to age 5) will utilize the following;
BRIGHT FITNESS ACCESSORIES - With a strong emphasis on Safety
Slide Maps
Tunnels
Exercise Ball
Step Blocks
Jump Ropes
Body Bars
Climbers for developmental benefit
The mental climber encourages
spatial awareness and the vestibular dome develops the inner ear, thereby
assisting the child who is just beginning to walk. The gross motor program will
be directed at a different focus each week.
Our sports & fitness
conditioning programs will teach sports and exercise skills and how to improve
coordination, balance, strength, power, and speed. Professional instructors will teach proper
technical skills, strategies, exercise drills and motivational training.
In addition to the physical
conditioning, our martial arts classes will educate children about the
potential dangers that may arise when talking to strangers and teach them how
to protect themselves if they are in an uncomfortable situation.
FITNESS
The fitness training area will
consist of the following:
State of the art weight training
Cardio equipment
Free weights
Exercise Bands and Balls
Stretch Gages
Core Training Accessories
Surround sound stereo system and
television monitors will be installed in the exercise area to help keep a
positive and high energy level of training.
The walls will have murals of super athletes performing vigorous
exercises and sports activities.
There will be mirrors on some of the
walls to allow people to see themselves performing the
exercises in proper form and to give the rooms more of a dimension.
The outdoor sports area will include
(where achievable):
Batting cages
Basketball Courts
Tennis Courts
Volley Ball Courts
Olympic Size Pools
Golf Ranges
Putting Greens
Handball Walls
Running Track
NUTRITION
It is essential to teach children
good nutritional values. The complex
nutrition center will have a computer lab facility with a library of software
programs on fitness and nutrition, bringing the awareness of how they work
together. Classes will be offered to teach both children and adults the proper
way to eat for themselves. They will be
taught what proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and calories are and how to apply
this information to improve their overall health.
According to a recent report from
the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, teenage obesity
is climbing, mirroring the increase in overweight adults. Kids snack on larger amounts than they used
to, and eat more meals away from home.
Teaching good nutritional habits will only get harder, as junk food
commercials get slicker and more fast food restaurants offer promotional
merchandise and invade school cafeterias.
In order to stop these trends we must take more responsibility for our
children's health – that is so important to the future of our nation.
MY TEAM
The SHAPE UP AMERICA CENTER™ will consist of certified experts
in the various fields of fitness and sports conditioning, motivational
training, nutrition, and overall health and wellness. I will act as Executive Director overseeing
all the facilities, marketing, promoting and maintaining the continual
development of other sports and fitness complexes while in the process of
building.
LOCATIONS
The SHAPE UP AMERICA CENTER™ will be located in residential
communities that are easily accessible for children and adults. Supervised transportation arrangements will
be available for kids to be picked up from either home or school and taken
safely to and from the centers.
Complexes will have handicap ramps at all entrances and exits.
PROPERTY LAYOUT
The front of the complexes will have
a colorful awning running from the entrance to the curb, so children can be
dropped off safely and protected from any inclement weather.
The entrance to the club will be
designed to give the feeling of stepping into a theme park, immediately exciting
kids and drawing them into the complex.
The reception counter will be sunken
down, allowing employees to be at the same eye level as kids entering the
complex. Thus, immediately discounting any feelings of
intimidation when they are first greeted. Our goal is to create a safe
environment for them from the moment they enter the complex to the time they
exit.
Just
past the reception area is the café with a juice bar and lounge decorated with
Norman Rockwell artwork. Children and
adults can sit at an old fashion soda parlor and enjoy healthy snacks and
beverages.
Sports nutrition supplements will be
sold in the café and in vending machines throughout the complex.
The floors will be black and white
tiled and the café will have a jukebox with television monitors throughout, to
play music videos. Across from the café
will be an arcade full of fun and exciting video games.
There will be consultation offices
and fitness evaluation rooms. All
members will receive an orientation and complete health and fitness evaluation
before using the facility.
The SHAPE UP AMERICA CENTER™ and its "Exer-tainment®" concept
will fill a tremendous void in the hearts of parents and children that has long
been needed in the communities of our cities.
For many years I have visualized and
dreamed of the SHAPE UP AMERICA CENTER.™ The time is NOW
for these facilities to become a reality!
PLEASE help to welcome my dream. Thank you.
Respectfully,

I would like to tell you a story
about a boy named Michael….
Fifteen-year-old Michael watched as his teammates played their
last basketball game. It was hard to
share the excitement from the sidelines.
Michael's coach had promised he would put him in soon, but just like
every other game that season, Michael still hadn't played. Before the season started, Michael remembered
the coach telling him he was too heavy and slow to play. But Michael showed determination by showing
up for every practice and trying his best to get better.
Michael begged his coach again, "How about now, Coach? Please
let me play. I know I can do
it." "Not now, Mike," his
coach replied; without even looking at him.
"But there's only two minutes left in the game. It's my last chance." "
It's a tied game and I need my best players out there," his coach
snapped. Michael's coach didn't care
about encouraging confidence or building a child's self-esteem. He only cared about winning. Sending a slow, overweight player into the
game was the last thing his coach wanted to do. Holding back tears, Michael
pleaded, "But Coach, you promised."
"Maybe next year, Pugsly!"
Michael was devastated. He
couldn't hide his humiliation at home.
In an attempt at keeping up Michael's morale, his mother signed him up
at the YMCA gym. At one time he had
shown her an advertisement for the gym with a picture of a body builder. He had said, "Ma, I want to look like
this guy." At the gym, Michael was
in awe of the equipment, noise and bodybuilders. Feeling discouraged, Michael sulked on a
nearby bench. There he was again,
watching but not participating. Another
bodybuilder witnessed his face across the gym and knew Michael would leave and
never return if somebody didn't help him.
Hey kid, you want big muscles?
Come here and I'll show you how."
The man knew how important it is to give a child support and
confidence when learning something new.
After his first day at the gym, Michael was excited about what he had
learned and the new sense of pride he was about to take in his body. He could feel
the tightness in his muscles. This gave
him a feeling of security and confidence, and that felt good.
I am Mike Torchia,
"Michael" from the story you just read. I was a determined young boy. I know first hand the pain and difficulty
millions of children suffer from dissatisfaction with their
own bodies. Low self-esteem has a
devastating result. I have spent my life
overcoming it and have become an authority in the field of health and fitness
through years of studying, teaching and living it. I have helped thousands of children and
adults create a healthier lifestyle.
I've worked with many celebrities
and have won several national titles in the sport of bodybuilding, including
Teenage Mr. America, Collegiate Mr. USA, and Mr. California. My high school basketball coach made an all
too common mistake. He made a choice,
winning the game outweighed nurturing a young boy's hopes and dreams. Many coaches and adults make the same
mistake, not realizing the damage they may be doing.
My program is designed to add value
to a child's life in a fun and exciting way revitalizing the sports programs
that have recently diminished from our school systems. Ultimately, my goal is to give children the
ability to prevent eating disorders, develop strong social skills, establish
leadership qualities and learn healthy eating habits. Children will not only develop a healthy
body, but also a strong, confident and healthy attitude towards life.
I was fortunate to find my way, many
of our kids out there never will without a helping and nurturing hand. Let us
together help them to find their way!!!
